Responsible Leadership - Doing What is Right for Herndon
Citizens of Herndon,
Two years ago we
were at a crossroad… voters could decide to continue down a road to higher
taxes, spending controlled by special interest groups and developers,
establish Herndon as a magnet community for illegal aliens... or… voters
could choose a new road to get government taxing and spending under
control, reject funding the hobbies of special interest groups, enforce the
rule of law, and ensure new development serves the citizens and not only
the bank accounts of the developers.
While there have
been many successes there is still a lot to do. The downtown needs to be
developed in a common-sense manner, protecting our heritage, mitigating the
impact of traffic and creating a pedestrian-friendly, safe and prosperous
environment. We need to continue the implementation of the 2027 Vision for
Herndon and prepare for the arrival of Metro Rail.
Additionally, we
must work together to weather the tribulations of the real estate market and
the economy while avoiding the Government's temptation to increase our taxes
· I do not own or have a financial interest in any property in downtown
Herndon. My family does not own or have a financial interest in any
property in downtown Herndon. Therefore, I can make decisions on
development without any conflicts of interest.
· I support a development process that fully engages citizen stake-holders
in the discussions concerning what is to be built in the downtown.
· I support downtown development with the proper scale, sensitivity to
Herndon's character, and reasonable density which make a positive
contribution to adjacent neighborhoods and will reject arguments from
development advocates who stand to benefit financially from over
development.
· I support proactive outreach to and planning with Fairfax County and
Loudoun County in the areas of land use, transfer of development rights,
interlocking comprehensive plans, transportation improvements and
preparing for the arrival of Metro Rail.
· I support efforts to improve communication on fiscal matters with the
citizens of Herndon and soliciting their guidance on both general policy
and specific expenditures.
· I support keeping the residential real estate tax rate as low as
possible and focusing that revenue on providing basic public services and
maintenance of existing public facilities.
· I support policies aimed at revitalizing our older neighborhoods
including eliminating overcrowded houses, illegal boarding houses and
quasi-hotels.
· I support working with Fairfax County to secure funding for:
» Stream bank stabilization and storm water management
» Fire station land acquisition and development
» Elimination of the fees at the Fairfax County landfill for Herndon's
refuse trucks
» Development and operation of a nature center at Runnymede Park
» Sports field maintenance and upgrades
» Herndon's Visitor Center and economic development
» Pro-rata funding from Fairfax County for Herndon's police
· I support aggressive enforcement of Herndon's land-use ordinances and
the Commonwealth's laws.
· I do not support using public funds, public employees or public property
to assist persons to find employment who are not legally allowed to work
in the United States.
· I support the enforcement of federal immigration law as defined by the
DHS/BICE - Herndon agreement that allows those arrested for a felony or
DUI to be questioned by trained police officers concerning their
immigration status and that deportation detainers be prepared for those
suspected as being illegal aliens.
