During the 1996 election  I was impressed with the use of the Internet and e-mail during the campaign. The active discussions on the issues at that time were of great benefit to the candidates and the voters. The ability to ask questions of the candidates created both better candidates and more informed citizens. Gee, open frank discussions of issues with politicians - what a concept! Well, it worked.

During the campaign process, I developed an e-mail contact list and I used that list to pass information about upcoming events and to encourage everyone to vote. I  received a number of very positive responses to those e-mails; some encouragement, some questions and some issue-related recommendations.

I continued that exchange by creating the "Cyber Advisory Committee." Periodically, as issues come to the Planning Commission and the Town Council, I send e-mail to committee volunteers containing the general background of the issue and solicit their opinions and recommendations. I placed detailed background information on the Cyber Advisory Committee website and included the recommendations in the Council's deliberation process.

The Cyber Advisory Committee website is provided as a public service to those who do not otherwise have a voice in the Town Council decision process and the viewing of the material on this site or the participation in the "straw poll" voting process does NOT compromise the users personal security. No information is collected by this site which can be used to identify individuals or their e-mail addresses. Participation in the Cyber Advisory Committee is a no-cost, voluntary activity..

I believe that this project allows me to be much better informed about opinions and community priorities and guides me to be a much better representative of the Herndon community.
